I’ve never met an entrepreneur or high-level professional who hasn’t wrestled with the question of “value.” “What makes me different?” “Why should someone choose me over everyone else offering similar products or services?” Writing as someone who knows, I warn that you can easily fall down the rabbit hole of over-analysis on this topic (or, worse, remain stuck there indefinitely). It’s not a subject that’s kind to the insecure, or to anyone with even a mild strain of Imposter Syndrome. And yet, if you want your message to resonate deeply, earn trust, and inspire people to act, there’s no getting around it. You must know your own value. Here’s the good news: defining it requires the opposite of overthinking. It needs only a spark of intuition – pure instinct that’s fun and light. The kind you had naturally when you were a kid, before life taught you to overexplain yourself. You won’t “create” your value by racking your brain for hours, furiously scribbling notes on a coffee-stained page at 2 a.m. It already exists, whether you’re aware of it or not. It IS you. Those closest to you probably see it every day. Your work is only to uncover it. Doing this means peeling back the identity layers you’ve accumulated since your teenage years. The stories you’ve told (or been told) about yourself and how you’re "supposed to" show up in the world might be blocking you from accessing your truer, deeper essence. And it’s that essence that people “get” about you and your business. It’s what they feel that makes them choose you. That’s why you’re different. That’s your value. Here’s an idea. Instead of trying to figure out what you offer, start thinking more about what you won’t offer. Your boundaries have a way of getting right to the heart of how you add value. For example, here are some of our team's "won'ts" (and what they communicate about us): 1. TRG won’t show properties to buyers who refuse to prepare their finances for a purchase. We get requests every day from people who want to walk through listings, but they aren’t interested in getting pre-approved (much less pre-underwritten). They would be nowhere near ready to take action even if they did find their dream home. Other agents might drop everything and drive 45 minutes to open the door for a stranger who is “just looking.” We won’t. Our Value: We demonstrate our ability to respect our clients’ time by treating our own time as sacred. 2. TRG won’t humor a seller who believes his home is worth $1MM more than it is. We will never tell people what they want to hear just to get a sign in the ground. Our Value: Our clients can always trust what we say, because we’ve shown that honesty is more important to us than “getting a listing.” We’ll stand by our fiduciary duty, even when it costs us opportunities in the short-term. 3. TRG won’t put its name on a product that it can’t present in a polished way. Some sellers (and agents) are okay with grainy cell phone shots on the MLS. Some sellers refuse to stage their properties. Some sellers don’t accept that it’s important to clean and power wash a home before putting it on the market. That’s okay. But those sellers are not our clients. Our Value: Each person in the community knows that, when they choose to list with TRG, their home will be shown in the most beautiful way possible. They know it not because we’ve told them so in words, but because they can see we’ve never put out a listing that hasn’t upheld the truth of that claim. So many capable, ambitious people exhaust themselves trying to prove they can do everything, handle anything, and be the perfect solution for every possible problem. Scarcity mindset tells them that, if they don’t approach life this way, they will lose out on opportunities. And while it’s true that saying “no” won’t get you everything, it keeps you aligned with what’s actually meant for you, and with the people you’re naturally equipped to serve at the highest level, simply by being yourself.
